October 31, 2003: The day that changed Bethany Hamilton’s life forever.
On this day, a 14-foot shark attacked Bethany Hamilton while she surfing was off the coast of Hawaii. The shark ripped off her arm before Bethany was able to get back to shore. This shark attack, didn’t just take away her arm, but gained her international attention. However, just one month after the attack, she returned to the water. Two months later, she placed 5th in the Open Women’s division surf competition. And the best part, just over a year after her attack, she won her first National Title. Her shark attack wasn’t the stop sign at the end of the road for Bethany. She’s still living her dream of becoming a professional surfer.
Her inspiring story lead to her book, Soul Surfer, which also lead to a movie. Lucky for you, after filming since 2005, the movie comes out in theaters tomorrow, April 8th. Soul Surfer is the true story about Bethany courageously overcoming all odds to become a champion again, through determination and faith. It uncovers Bethany’s (Anna Sophia Robb) drive to recover from her ordeal and how she coped with the question of her future. Strengthened and reinforced by the love of her parents, Tom (Dennis Quaid) and Cheri (Helen Hunt), and supported by her youth group leader Sara (Carrie Underwood), Bethany refuses to surrender and begins a brave arrival back to the water.
It’s probably going to rain tomorrow night, so what better way to spend it than going to the movies?! Go grab some popcorn and candy and hit the movie theater!
